What’s better than nail polish? Polish that lasts at least a week or more without chipping – also known as gel polish. But we all know that gel polish, while it lasts a long time and isn’t nearly as damaging to your nails as acrylic nails are, it is a little time consuming and if you go to a salon to get it done it can be expensive. So what’s better than gel polish you might ask? Gel polish that doesn’t require a UV lamp OR a top coat of any sort.
Wet n Wild recently came out with their ‘1 Step Wonder Gel’ line that’s supposed to give you the ease of normal polish but with the benefits of gel polish. According to their website, this polish should last up to 2 weeks without chipping or peeling with no lamp needed and no harsh removal necessary. It’s also supposed to do this without the need of more than 1 coat & without needing a top coat.
Let’s see if the Wet n Wild 1 Step Wonder Gel stands up to the claims. I love anything pink, so naturally the color ‘It’s Sherbert-Day’ was the one that initially caught my eye & nudged me to buy the polish.*
Let me just start by saying that this is by far one of the most beautiful bright pinks I’ve ever had on my nails! It also, like advertised, only required one coat to reach full opacity. And afterwards I didn’t even need to apply a top coat – it actually stayed pretty glossy even after drying (most polished stay kind of shiny, but lose the ‘wet polish’ look after drying).
Above is an image from a few hours after applying, and you can tell that the color is super vibrant and it still looks glossy and shiny – similar to a gel manicure. Now all that was left was to see if it stood the test of time.
Day 3 arrived and, ok, not so glossy anymore. And the polish had started wearing off at the edges – like normal polish usually does when one does not apply a top coat. Perhaps it would’ve lasted longer and more like a gel mani if I had had long enough nails to “cap” my nails and cover the edges? Anyways, the damage wasn’t enough to discourage me too much. It wasn’t super noticeable, and it only seemed to truly wear off on my index and middle fingers – my two most used fingers.
Moving on…Day 5 came around and my left hand still looked pretty much the same as it did on Day 3, which was great. My right (and dominant) hand however….
was a mess. Peeling and chipping like crazy. Again, you can see that the damage is worst on my index and middle fingers, especially my index. This is after 5 days of of constant use – be it writing, typing, restraining animals and other regular things around work at the vet clinic. 😦
After day 5 I gave up and removed the polish – I had enough information.
Conclusion: TBG Rating – 2 out of 5 stars
I would give this a 1 out of 5 stars…however, I’d like to give this the benefit of the doubt for 2 reasons.
- It might have worked a lot better had I been able to “cap” my nails
- It also might have lasted longer with a top coat
So, while it did seem to hold its shine for a while, it didn’t even last a full week, let alone two like advertised. I love the color, and the fact that it did only require one coat to reach full opacity (maybe this is another factor as well). And the $5 price tag at Target is nice as well. But for me it just didn’t cut it. Like I say in a lot of reviews…maybe it would work better for someone that doesn’t have such a hands-on job like me? Maybe at a desk job this would actually last a full week, maybe two?
So yes, 2 out of 5 stars today ladies and gents. I do think that, after my nails grow out a bit, I’m going to try this polish again. And next time I will definitely cap my nails, and on some I will top coat to see if that makes any difference as well.
Have you guys tried this polish out yet? What were your results? Let me know in the comments below! ❤
